A programme designed to rehabilitate male domestic abuse offenders, in addition to supporting the women and children affected, is being extended into six Scottish local authorities.
Previously in action in 13 local authorities - including Edinburgh, Aberdeen City, Falkirk and Stirling - the Caledonian System will now be put into effect over Glasgow, South Lanarkshire, Fife, the Highlands, and Dundee City, in partnership with Perth and Kinross.
The programmes latest funding of £2.8 million was announced by Justice Secretary, Humza Yousaf when visiting domestic abuse service ASSIST in Glasgow. He stated that the funding will double the schemes potential to reach offenders.
Working closely with men convicted of domestic abuse, the Caledonian System helps the men to recognise their abuse, take responsibility for their actions and reduce the risk of them re-offending. These services provided can last up to two years and involve preparation and motivation sessions, group sessions and post-group work.
The scheme also offers services and support for women and children affected by domestic abuse. For female partners and ex-partners, safety planning is offered alongside advice and emotion support, working with social services and the police. It is ensured that children’s rights are upheld and they are fully supported throughout the process.
Introducing the extension plans for the Caledonian System on Twitter, Humza Yousaf stated, “Delighted to announce funding for a further rollout of the Caledonian System - a pioneering programme which works with domestic abuse perpetrators & victims. Evaluation of the programme demonstrates offenders less likely to re-offend & female victims felt safer as a result of the programme.”
